Chapter 01 · The Crew

A Decade
Hunting Pelagics

Hilman Sport Fishing was founded by Captain Hilman — a fourth-generation Maldivian fisherman turned IGFA-certified guide. We run a single, immaculately maintained sportfisher out of North Malé, rigged with 50-wide Shimano Tiagras, custom outriggers, and a sonar that doesn't lie. We don't run high-volume trips. We run obsessive ones.

Every charter is led by a three-person crew who fish these waters 280 days a year. We know the bait balls, the FADs, the temperature breaks, and where the big yellowfin are stacked at 4am on a moon-three tide. That's the difference between a boat ride and a hunt.

Hilman put us on a 92kg yellowfin within 40 minutes of leaving the dock. The boat is immaculate, the gear is serious, and the crew read the water like a book. Best charter I've ever done — and I've fished six continents.

We came for tuna and got tuna, wahoo, and a 180kg blue marlin we tagged and released. The drone footage they sent the next day was unreal. Already booked next March.

Took my 12-year-old daughter on the half day. Crew was patient, gear was right-sized, and she boated her first GT. She hasn't stopped talking about it. Worth every dollar.

Frequently
Asked

01What gear do you provide?
Everything. Penn Senator 30s for inshore, Shimano Tiagra 50W rigs for trolling, custom 80-lb stand-up for marlin nights, plus all lures, live bait, terminal tackle, and IGFA-rated leaders. Bring your own gear if you want — we'll rig it.
02When is the best fishing season?
Yellowfin and GT run year-round. Marlin and sailfish are best November through April during the northeast monsoon. Wahoo and mahi peak May through October. The "off-season" doesn't really exist here — we just chase different fish.
03What if the weather turns?
Captain's call. If we deem conditions unsafe, we reschedule at no cost or fully refund. Light rain doesn't stop us — squalls and 3m+ swell do. We monitor Windy.com, marine forecasts, and our own buoys 6 hours before every trip.
04What's your cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 14 days before. 50% refund up to 72 hours before. Inside 72 hours we hold the deposit, but we'll happily move you to another date in the same season at no charge.
05What should I bring?
Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+), polarized sunglasses, a brimmed hat, light long-sleeve shirt, and soft-soled shoes. Drinks, snacks, lunch, and seasickness tablets are on board. Bring a waterproof phone bag for the action photos.
06Do I need fishing experience?
Not for Half Day or Full Day trips — our crew teaches you everything from setting drag to fighting from a stand-up belt. Overnight trips require some big-game experience, or a half-day prep trip with us beforehand. Kids 8+ welcome on Half Day.
